The Friends of the Deming Library is an all-volunteer group that was created in 1984 by community members who wanted something more than a Bookmobile serving our area. They came together to raise the money and volunteer labor necessary to build the original building and then to expand it and build a meeting room 25 years later.
The Friends of the Deming Library own the library building and are responsible for maintaining it. Whatcom County Library System pays for staff, utilities, and all the books, magazines, computers, and other materials you see in the library. However, it is the Friends of the Deming Library who cut the lawn, clean the gutters, fix the toilets, and otherwise keep the Deming Library ready for use.
It costs about $19,000 a year to maintain the library building and provide our programs and activities. These include: art and photography displays by local artists, a range of speakers, the Children's Learning Garden, our biannual newsletter, book and plant sales, and a host of other events. Whether your interest is in volunteering or joining the Board, we look forward to hearing from you.
